Tips for Promoting Early Literacy in Children

Early literacy does not necessarily mean teaching young children how to read but pertains to their ability to learn about words, sounds, and language. In addition to after school programs in Bayside, New York, parents can promote early literacy in children through everyday, fun activities. Talking, singing, reading, and games all support healthy development in children.

As an established Chinese school in Bayside, New York, we will share tips on how to support early literacy development in your child:

  • Add reading to your daily routine.
Start early by reading to your child during infancy. This promotes healthy brain development and establishes the foundation for language skills. As your child grows, make reading a part of your daily routine. Read age-appropriate books together before naptime or bedtime.
  • Ask questions and point out similar words.
Similar to tutoring, ask your child questions after a reading session. Make the activity more interactive by asking questions about the story or characters. You may also point out similar words, such as words that begin with the same letter. This helps children familiarize different letters and associate certain words with that letter.
  • Sing nursery rhymes together.
Young children develop listening skills and early literacy when they hear the rhythms and sounds of language. Through singing, kids get an understanding of the sounds in words and boost phonological awareness. This allows kids to hear sounds that make up the words used in spoken language and what they mean.
